My Current Music Research

Although I'm a musician this blog is about using technology in teaching and my eLearning projects here at Bath Spa University. I have been exploring the use of audio in assessment feedback and I'm currently looking at the use of the iPad as a teaching tool in the lecture theatre. For more information click the tabs above.
Clarinettist and conductor, I studied at the Royal Academy of Music and King’s College London. I perform with such groups as the Kreutzer and Smith Quartets, the Gavin Bryars Ensemble and was a member of the London Sinfonietta. I was Music Director of Rambert Dance Company during the 1990s, conducting ballet performances at major opera houses across Europe and America and have also conducted for the Royal Ballet. I was Clarinet Professor at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (1982-94) and am currently Professor of Music at Bath Spa University. Recent CDs include the chamber music of Hugh Wood, solo works by Tom Johnson and clarinet quintets by Feldman and Fox, a new one of music by Boulez and Radulescu comes out this summer. My book The Versatile Clarinet (Routledge) was published in 2006 and I've contributed chapters to the Cambridge Companion to Recorded Music and the Cambridge History of Musical Performance.

RECENT MUSIC RESEARCH

My article 'Contemporary Performance Practice and Tradition' (March 2012) has been published in the open access peer-reviewed on-line journal Music Performance Research. You can view it here and download a pdf version.

The Cambridge History of Musical Performance has just been published (February 2012) in which I have a chapter on instrumental music in the 20th/21st century.

I am currently recording a CD for the Clarinet Classics label to be issued in October 2012 of Boulez Domaines, Horatiu Radulescu's extraordinary The Inner Time, a tiny piece Ixor by Scelsi and a new clarinet quintet I have commissioned from Mihailo Trandafilovski which I premiered with the Kreutzer String Quartet just before Christmas. The CD will also contain a film of the performance of the Radulescu and a page of the sketches for the Boulez housed at the Paul Sacher Archive in Basel.
Working with Mihailo at a rehearsal/presentation at the Royal Academy of Music (London).

Many of my recordings are available on iTunes.

I'm currently touring with the Gavin Bryars Ensemble (I've been playing for Gavin for over 25 years) playing many performances this year of Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic as this is the centenary of the sinking, at venues including Birmingham Town Hall in April and the Barbican, London.

I have also just finished touring with the Richard Alston Dance Company, playing Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint for Alston’s ballet Roughcut. Performances round the UK included Sadler’s Wells in March, as well as New York and Aachen.
